Fine Wine Pioneers for 300 years

The Bassermann-Jordan family has made its mark on the cultural landscape of the Palatinate region like no other. The history of the wine estate is the history of a family dynasty which co-founded the cultivation of quality wines in Germany, upon which it has had a decisive influence for almost 300 years. The Bassermann-Jordans have always been outstanding winemakers, art connoisseurs and wine experts who have played an active part in political life as mayors, members of parliament and wine book authors. In 1718, the family emigrated from Savoy to the Palatinate, where Pierre Jordan (1693 – 1781) laid the foundation of the winery which only grew Riesling grapes until 1996. He was followed by a long line of highly respected successors, whose ranks included Dr. Ludwig Bassermann-Jordan (1869 – 1914), who helped to introduce the first German wine law and establish what was later to become the Association of German Quality Wine Estates (VDP), and Dr. Friedrich von Bassermann-Jordan (1872-1959), author of the standard reference book »The History of Viniculture«. The estate has belonged to the entrepreneur Achim Niederberger since 2002.

First Cru Vineyards and Sustainability

Bassermann-Jordan has always been synonymous with First Cru grape-growing locations. The vineyards in Forst, Deidesheim and Ruppertsberg comprise a total grape-growing area of 49 hectares in 20 individual vineyards, 85% of which produce Riesling. More than a third are top vineyard locations, such as Hohenmorgen, Kirchenstück and Jesuitengarten. Over the centuries, the wine estate Geheimer Rat Dr. von Bassermann-Jordan has worked continuously to improve the quality of the cultivation methods. A pioneer spirit, entrepreneurial power, innovation and business practices that preserve culture and traditions are the guiding principles. The careful handling of the wine grapes and their meticulous selection have always been the focus here. This creates individual Fine Rieslings with a strong character which are produced today by winemaker Ulrich Mell. Continuous efforts are made at Bassermann-Jordan to introduce and develop measures that enhance quality, such as organic cultivation. Preventive pest control using natural preparations, as well as our practice of ensuring that more and more tasks are performed manually, form the basis of this. In this way, a rich and diversified flora and fauna can develop which support the efforts being made to produce natural and sustainable viticulture. No wonder that poet laureate Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749 – 1832) crowned his stay at a health resort with a glass of Bassermann-Jordan. 

Today, the historic wine cellar in Deidesheim mainly reflects the traditional method of cultivating wines in wooden casks. The precious delicacies mature slowly and gently in sandstone vaults that have been built and expanded over centuries. In addition to this, state-of-the-art pressing and winemaking technology and facilities make it possible to produce wines at the highest technical level with a modern, fruit-driven character. As a matter of principle, winemaker Mell prefers a natural fermentation process without any artificial additives. Geheimer Rat Dr. von Bassermann-Jordan wine estate grows a wide variety of wines with many different nuances, from terroir-driven mineral wines, which can be stored for long periods in the classical style of the House of Bassermann-Jordan, to the delicately fruity, lively, highly aromatic wines that are an expression of our times up to the nobles sweet wines many people fall in love with.
